A little bit of history!
The creation of organized mixed martial arts (MMA) competition began in 1980.
The short answer is that MMA is less popular than Boxing.
Dana White: UFC eyes Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Justin Gaethje for 'Fight Island' this summer.
However, is MMA less popular Nowadays?
The truth is that the big heritage of boxing culture doesn't help to join the sport.-Why?
Because everyone who wants to become famous through Boxing it is very difficult to plot his own, unique course due to the previous champions! There are subconscious reflections of previous fighters about their style and techniques while we watch new fighters in the ring. The majority of the audience seems to be prejudiced toward the fighter and his background. This is great for quality but not for quantity! Young athletes seek quick accession (glory and money) and if they could find it anywhere else, they leave. End of story!
Boxing hurts itself more than MMA hurts it...
Corruption.
Maybe corruption is in Boxing's nature...
By examining the roles and actions of the main participants in the sport we can see that there are different types of corruption in ‘modern’ boxing comparing with the past but is still there.
How Boxing can reduce the incidences of corruption?
There are many solutions like improving contracts, developing a database of boxers, establish an independent committee and employing credible referees and judges and more...
Decline of the heavyweight division.
What has happened in the heavyweight division?
There are many great fighters like Wladimir Klitschko, world heavyweight champion twice but despite all his skills and talent is not a worldwide superstar. There is no magic in names today like before 10 or 20 years.
There is a lack of superstars.
Too many weight divisions.
Everyone is a 5 time multi-division... There are too many belts floating around...
Promoters today.
The last years, at the end of the day the best fighters are not fighting the best fighters and that’s a huge dissatisfaction for the fans of the sport and turns them away.
The primary reason that we consider in order to understand the rise of MMA is the speed of the sport and the constant possibility of a flash knockout or submission.
Boxing is as much a science as it is a sport while MMA is incredibly technical as well but it’s just not on the same level as boxing in that arena.
The brutal truth is that the more blood and knockouts the more viral it goes and MMA offers that. For the same reason Americans would rather watch football than soccer..
Financially speaking
On the other hand, of the top 20 PPV events ever, boxing owns 15 of them and MMA 5.
Moreover, the UFC has only 15 events of the top 50 events ever that sold over 1 million PPV views with the best ever being at UFC 229 selling 2.4 million, which was the only one over 2 million ever.
Boxing has eclipsed UFC 229’s record 4 times in the last 20 years and has 25+ events with over 1 million buys in that same time period.
Contrary to public perception, boxing gets consistently higher ratings than the UFC and attracts more viewers in the 18 to 49-year-old demographic.
According to Nielsen, ESPN’s broadcast of Lomachenko’s history- making victory over fellow two-time Olympic gold-medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux effectively doubled the audience that watched the UFC card from Fresno televised by FS1.
The ESPN Top Rank boxing show had 1.73 million viewers while 870,000 watched Brian Ortega’s UFC main-event victory over Cub Swanson. HBO’s boxing broadcast of Miguel Roman’s stoppage of Orlando Salido finished third with 576,000 viewers when households with two-plus viewers were weighed.
Between 2002 and 2017, boxing had the biggest PPV buy rates 13 out of 16 years and boxing owns all 8 of the top 8 combat sports ppv buy rates of all time.
Despite all this, in a recent poll by Washington Post/UMass Lowell 28% of all Americans identify as boxing fans but only 25% identify as fans of MMA.
MMA has only gathered recent mainstream attention thanks to Conor and Ronda Rousey, but most people didn’t know Anderson Silva or Georges St-Pierre. However, it' s doubtless that MMA gains uninterruptedly its audience even if the Boxing leads to cash...
In Boxing anyone can fight anyone if they both can make the same weight and if the promoters are up for the fight! Whereas, matchmaking in the UFC, being the leading organisation in MMA, is more organised having greater control over the popularity, excitement and value of fights.
To all of you who say MMA is more popular than Boxing. I am a fan of both, but everytime I Google something like: Most popular sports in the world, Boxing is on every ranking list and MMA not. If on those lists MMA is on, Boxing is above... Try it for yourself guys and we would like to see a ranking list where MMA is above Boxing!

To Sum Up
Boxing will always be regarded as the sweet science and as a gentleman’s sport, whereas MMA has strange, unfair stereotypes as being a bloody and brutal sport.MMA has only gathered recent mainstream attention thanks to Conor and Ronda Rousey, but most people didn’t know Anderson Silva or Georges St-Pierre.
